All Seattle area high schoolers are invited to apply for the 2022 Peace2theYouth mentorship program. According to the CDC, teenage emergency room visits for suicide attempts increased significantly during the pandemic, with a 50% rise in cases in females and almost 4% increase in males. With the rise in mental distress youth are experiencing, Joy&theHood was created to help youth cultivate love, leadership, and peace in their lives.
Joy&theHood Youth Wellness Collective is looking for six high schoolers that qualify for Free/Reduced lunch or identify as BIPOC or LGBTQ+ to join our Peace2theYouth pilot mentorship program. Youth will be mentored by young adults who will teach them mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and other helpful tools to help them combat stress. We will also have discussions about confidence building, the power of vulnerability, and how to convey our stories of struggle and resilience.
The Peace2theYouth pilot program will run for six weeks and meet twice a week. Dates are still tentative, but the program expects to run in the Fall of 2022.
The mentors at Joy&theHood are not mental health professionals. Instead, we are young adults who have battled and have been healing the mental health issues we’ve experienced in our own lives. We are looking to foster a community where vulnerability, empathy, and compassion are nurtured and encouraged.
